CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the hemp plant that is non-intoxicating, which means it won’t get you or your pet “high.” THC is the intoxicating compound in cannabis that causes a high. While THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, these distant cousins couldn’t be more different. THC mainly exerts its effects by activating your body’s CB1 receptor found in the brain and causes intoxication. THC is also toxic to pets but CBD is non-toxic and possesses no psychoactive properties, meaning that you never have to worry about it getting your pet “high.”

Is CBD safe for pets to consume?
Yes. A clinical study on Osteoarthritic dogs showed that a high dose of 2mg CBD / kilogram given every 12 hours over a 4 week period, showed no observable side effects. Several other studies also state that CBD is non-toxic and safe for pets to consume. However, THC is toxic for pets. There hasn't been a direct study on CBD for pets with anxiety but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence from pet owners to support it. Also, studies on humans with anxiety has shown that CBD stimulates 5-HT1A, a serotonin receptor that gives an anti-anxiety effect - this is how CBD works to reduce anxiety. Since dogs and cats have Serotonin receptors in their physiology and produce serotonin naturally, CBD could be a potential benefit to decreasing your pets anxiety and regulating their serotonin levels.
